Former Philippines coach: "Winning Vietnam is a dream to change my whole career'
That is the sharing of Simon McMenemy, when the Philippines surpassed the Vietnam national team at My Dinh Stadium in the group stage of the AFF Cup 2010.
10 years ago, the Philippines national team was still considered an underdog team in the region. Therefore, after winning Myanmar 7-1 in the opening match, coach Henrique Calisto of Vietnam national team only saw the match against the Philippines as a match to increase goal difference.
However, what happened on My Dinh Stadium that day was a nightmare when the army led by coach Simon McMenemy, played a resilient match and then knocked Vietnam down with a score of 2-0.
Speaking of that match, the former Philippines coach shared:
"That victory made my name known in Vietnam and many other countries. It was really a turning point in my career, winning beyond the expectations of Filipinos.
We did not expect to come to My Dinh and win. The goal of the Philippines is to try to make a draw. If we lose this match, we will try our best to beat Myanmar. It was the most perfect scenario that Filipinos thought of before the game.
However, the outcome was even better. The players, the Philippines Football Federation and I did not expect that. It was a dream, none of us prepared to accept this feat. "- according to Zing
In the match that day, Henrique Calisto's side played extremely deadlock during the match. The attack beautiful and varied as the match was no longer maintained. Also in his remarks, Mr. McMenemy said that that day, coach Calisto was too subjective:
"At the pre-match press conference, I remember Calisto was very arrogant. He only talked about how many goals his team would score and how important that was to the goal difference. I think he didn't learn about the Philippines so didn't. In fact, he didn't change his tactics at all during the match. My opponent kept a formation right from the beginning."
In addition, Mr. McMenemy also shared about the success of Park Hang-seo when he said that the Korean coach succeeded thanks to luck and the great victory belongs to technical director Jurgen Gede.
