Charyl Chappuis: 'Vietnam is the power house of Southeast Asia'
The Thai midfielder admitted that Vietnam had conquered the region's leading position and became a big challenge for the Changsuek
Sharing on ESPN, midfielder Charyl Chappuis has spent a lot of comments on regional football recently. Among them, Thai football has lost its number one position invaded by Vietnam and threaten by many other teams.
Notably the 2018 AFF Cup championship, gold medal in SEA Games 30th or the most outstanding achievement in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup 2019. Not only that, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia fell into the same group at the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Once again Vietnam proved its strength by topping the table, Malaysia is ranked second with 2 points less. Thailand pitily took 3rd place.
"This is football - we probably started to think we were the best," the 28-year-old told ESPN. "I remember the 2016 Suzuki Cup. I don't want to come across as disrespectful but the feeling was that it was kind of easy. We went into games thinking we'd win no matter what. Now, we see Vietnam is on the top, Indonesia is close, Malaysia is coming back with a new team and so is Singapore ... that's how football is."
Despite being out of the international fold for the last few years, Chappuis is trying to force his way back onto the national team's roster by performing for new club Port FC.
Under Zico Thai (Kiatisuk), Chappuis played in high form. He was a key factor in the 2014 and 2016 AFF Cup championships. The Swiss-born midfielder said his choice to return to Thailand has changed his life, and he has never regretted it.
